Executive Summary

Intermediate Programme Report 2007 (January - June 2007)

Previous Executive Summaries

This Intermediate Programme Report summarises the results achieved in the first half of 2007. To complement this report, up-to-date statistical information will be available in the password-protected area of our website.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The total planned effort in the ITEA programme is still expected to be slightly over 10,000 person-years. The ambition for ITEA 2 is a total of 20,000 person-years. Call 1 is a high Call with 2,469 person-years, but Call 2 will probably be smaller. This is a continuation of the trend in ITEA of alternating large and small calls. Moreover, the first call for the European Seventh Framework programme (FP7) closed in May 2007, which is likely to have an additional effect on the size of Call 2 of ITEA 2.

ITEA’s current project portfolio – Calls 1 to 8 – consists of 84 projects: 59 are completed, 25 are on-going or in launch.

INTER-CLUSTER / INTER-PDC CALL

Based on an initiative in some ITEA countries intended to provide more explicit support for regional focusing activities such as clusters and Poles de Compétitivité (PdCs), the ITEA 2 community supported a new Call for Inter-Cluster / Inter-PdC projects. This additional Call was issued in June, and the proposals should join the regular ITEA 2 process for FPPs in the second half of 2007.

ITEA 2 SYMPOSIUM 2007

“Using ICT to deal with major societal challenges”

The ITEA 2 Symposium 2007 will be held in Berlin on 18 and 19 October. The symposium programme is scheduled around this year’s overall theme: ‘Using ICT to deal with major societal challenges’.  For the first time, we will open the second day of the Symposium to the general public. Our goal is to attract an even larger audience for e.g. keynote speakers and the exhibition. Hence day one will maintain the character of a ‘family day’ for people already involved in ITEA / ITEA 2.

ARTEMIS

We are still working on the clarification of the relationship between ITEA 2 and the Advanced Research and Technology for Embedded Intelligence and Systems (ARTEMIS) initiative, and considering alignment if and where that makes sense. We try to support the ARTEMIS initiative so that it contributes to and builds on the continuing success of ITEA. Specifically, we are discussing the options to organise the annual events of ITEA 2 and ARTEMIS in such a way that we do not confuse our target groups. In addition, we have arranged for some alignment between the next ITEA 2 Roadmap and the ARTEMIS Research Agenda, by involving certain experts in both activities. Finally, for 2007, we have installed a Service Level Agreement with the ARTEMIS Industrial Association (ARTEMISIA) to support the ARTEMIS initiatives from the ITEA 2 Office. We will evaluate the relationship again at the end of 2007.

ORGANISATIONAL ISSUES

The following organisational changes occurred:

ITEA 2 thanks all departing colleagues for their contributions and welcomes the new members of the BSG, STG and Office.
