Previous Executive Summaries

This Programme Report summarises the results achieved in the period 1 January to 31 December 2007. To complement the report, up-to-date statistical information will be available in the password-protected area of our website.

• PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
Within the ITEA programme, 16 projects are still active and 68 projects have been completed. The total size of the ITEA portfolio is over 10,000 person-years. After two call cycles in ITEA 2, 16 ITEA 2 projects are currently active, while 18 projects have been labelled and are still in-launch. In total, ITEA 2 now comprises 4,959 person-years, based on current full project proposals (FPPs). The intercluster/inter-pole-de-compétitivité (PdC) call, a new initiative in the course of 2007, has resulted in two labelled projects.

The relative participation of companies other than the ITEA Founding Companies (IFCs), including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), continues to increase. Measured in person-years, in ITEA 2 Call 2, SMEs accounted for 28% of all effort in the ITEA/ITEA 2 Programmes – see Figure 1.  The total number of partners involved in the ITEA/ITEA 2 Programmes is steadily increasing, with 147 new partners in ITEA 2 Call 2 alone.

• ROADMAP 3
In the course of 2007, work started on the new ITEA 2 Roadmap edition 3. Based on the efforts of a team of experts from the ITEA 2 Founding Companies and with involvement and input from other opinion leaders in software-intensive systems and services, the new Roadmap document is planned for completion in 2008. The application areas are being completely renewed to reflect industrial trends better.

• PR AND COMMUNICATIONS
ITEA 2 Symposium 2007
The ITEA 2 Symposium in Berlin attracted an all-time high of 466 participants. The importance of addressing the key societal issues by means of software-intensive systems and services was stressed by key speakers from government, business and research organisations. The symposium exhibition was again a focal point for demonstrating the impact of ITEA 2 projects.

• THE ARTEMIS INITIATIVE
With the establishment in January 2007 of ARTEMISIA, the association for R&D actors in the Advanced Research and Technology for Embedded Intelligence and Systems (ARTEMIS) initiative, and the ARTEMIS joint undertaking (JU) formally announced by the European Commision at the beginning of 2008, the preparations for a first ARTEMIS Call in 2008 are on schedule. The ITEA Community has supported the ARTEMIS initiative in many ways: involvement of key management and staff of founding companies, ITEA 2 Office supporting all the organisational, administrative and legal preparations for ARTEMISIA, and ITEA 2 Office supporting the preparation of the first ARTEMIS Call.
The scope of the programmes is clearly different, but the overlap in the applications and the participating industries is such that alignment in the overlap areas will continue to be supported. For example, the ARTEMISIA / ITEA 2 Symposium in 2008 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands will be a co-ordinated event with ARTEMISIA with a joint one-day symposium programme. Another example is the participation of common experts in the ITEA 2 Roadmap 3 and in the ARTEMIS Strategic Research Agenda.

• ORGANISATIONAL ISSUES
The following organisational changes occurred:

ITEA 2 thanks all departing colleagues for their contributions and welcomes the new members of Board, BSG, STG and Office.

• AMBITION FOR THE ITEA 2 PROGRAMME IN 2008
“The integration of IT into virtually all aspects of economy and society is creating a digitally-enabled economy that is responsible for generating the lion’s share of economic growth and prosperity.”

ITEA 2 aims to be the driver of this integration by the exploitation and the further development of its key strengths and in partnership with the related programmes in EUREKA and the ARTEMIS and European Nanoelectronics Initiative Advisory Council (ENIAC) joint undertakings:

Eindhoven, 28 March 2008
